Alma Kathaleen Garland, age 78, of Hagerstown, and a resident of NMS Health Care of Hagerstown, died Wednesday May 5, 2010 at the facility.
Born September 3, 1931 in Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Jabez and Gladys Schetrompf Knable and the widow of Herman F. Garland, who died July 19, 1989, and whom she married June 7, 1952.
She retired from the Washington County Board of Education on June 11, 1997, as an Elementary School Teacher.
Alma received her B.A. Degree in 1971 and her M.S. Degree in 1977 from Towson University.
She taught in Salem Avenue and Bester Elementary Schools in Hagerstown, MD.
She was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Waynesboro, PA.
She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Joy Reno of Hagerstown, MD., one son, Michael K. Garland, Sr. of Chambersburg, PA., two sisters; Mary Catherine Strait of Chambersburg, PA., Mildred O. Stotler of Hancock, MD., three brothers; Charles K. Knable of Avon Park, FL., Carl L. Knable and Ray A. Knable both of Needmore, PA., two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold E. Knable in 2004.
A service will be held Monday May 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, MD. Pastor Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Christian Cemetery, Warfordsburg, PA.
The family will receive friends Sunday 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
