Beatrice Geraldine “Gerri” Shives, age 86, passed peacefully from this life at the home of her daughter, Beverly, on Friday, October 31, 2014.
Born May 7, 1928, in Buck Valley, Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Chester and Rosie Isabelle Ray Bishop, and the widow of Chester W. Shives, who died August 8, 2008, and whom she married October 28, 1950.
She was a 1945 graduate of Warfordsburg High School, and a member of the Hancock United Methodist Church.
She was retired from working as a cafeteria cook for the Washington County Board of Education; was formerly a supervisor for London Fog Manufacturing; and was known by many as the local Avon Lady.
She was member of the Webster B. Harrison Post #26 American Legion Auxiliary, in Hancock, Md.
She is survived by two daughters, Patti A. Mellott and husband, Larry, of Needmore, Pa., and Beverly K. Stotler and husband, Frank, of Hancock, Md.; one sister, Velma Mann, of Warfordsburg, Pa.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Cramer and husband, Matt, of Shippensburg, Pa.; caregivers, Julie Farris, Mary Ann Golden, Debbie Reed, Brittany Reed, Bonnie Shoemaker, Patsy Mills, Missy Yonker, Angie and Derek McBee, and Tammy Zahm.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Eileen Swain; and one brother, Lloyd Bishop.
A service will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hancock United Methodist Church, 170 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. Rev. Michael Bynum and Rev. Richard Bernhard will officiate. Burial will follow in the Buck Valley Christian Cemetery, 2281 Harmonia Road, Warfordsburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends on Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., and at the Church on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the Funeral Home will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday.
The family requests that memorial contributions, in Gerri’s name, may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Md. 21740, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Road, Ste. D., Timonium, Md. 21093.
