Boyce Wayne “Jim” Powell, age 76, of Clear Spring, died on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, Md.
Born April 30, 1937, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Boyce Nicholson and Elsie Mae Unger Powell, and the husband of Thelma M. McCarty Powell, his first wife, who died January 8, 1990.
He was a carpenter for D.L. Bowman, and a self-employed small engine repairman.
He was a member of Orchard Ridge First Church of God, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his second wife, Wilma J. Reed Powell, whom he married in 1991, at Orchard Ridge First Church of God; one daughter, Cheryle Loomis, of Scotland, S.D.; one son, Barry Powell, of Hancock, Md.; two step-sons, Anthony Hull, of Hagerstown, Md., and Travis Hull, of Clear Spring; one step-daughter, Michelle Landers, of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Marlene Vlasach, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Joan McCusker, of Clear Spring; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and first wife, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Gary Powell; and two sisters, Frances Barthalow and Sandra K. Powell.
A service will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m., at Orchard Ridge First Church of God, Orchard Ridge Road, Hancock. Rev. Jeff Hawbaker will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Church, on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the John Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742, or to the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. 21750, to help defray his funeral expenses.
