Chester W. Shives, age 83, of West High Street, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the Fulton County Medical Center Long-Term Care, in McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born February 26, 1925, in Hancock, Md., he was the son of the late Wilbur J. and Leticia A. Shoemaker Shives.
He was a 1943 graduate of Hancock High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WW II.
He was retired from Mack Truck, in Hagerstown, Md., as an assembler and maintenance employee.
He was a member of the U.A.W.; a life member of Tonoloway Rod and Gun Club; a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post #26 American Legion, in Hancock; a member of the Golden Bull Dog, at Mack Truck; and he was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Geraldine "Gerri" Bishop Shives, of Hagerstown, Md., whom he married October 28, 1950; two daughters, Patti A. Mellott and husband, Larry, of Needmore, Pa., Beverly "Bev" K. Stotler and husband, Frank, of Hancock; one granddaughter, Kimberly D. Cramer and husband, Matthew, of Shippensburg, Pa.; and personal caregivers, Beth Bowers, Lisa Hughes and Margaret Hughes.
A service will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., at the Buck Valley Christian Church. Rev. Richard L. Bernhard will officiate. Burial, with a military service by the Tri-State Honor Guard, will be in the Buck Valley Christian Cemetery, located on Harmonia Road, Buck Valley, Pa.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the Church on Sunday, one hour prior to the service. For the convenience of family and friends the Funeral Home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
