Hancock, Maryland

Darwin Thomas Tobias Mills, Sr., age 75, of Hancock, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at War Memorial Hospital, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Friday, August 1, 1941, he was the son of the late Bruce J. Mills, Sr. and Lulu Irene Shoemaker Mills. He was the widower of June Delores Mills, whom he married May 18, 1979, and who died September 19, 2007.

He was a graduate of Hancock High School with the class of 1960; and he also graduated from the Maryland Police Academy and the Maryland Correctional Academy.

He was a member of the Stone Bridge Church of The Brethren, in Hancock.

He served as a police officer in Hancock from 1964 until 1974; the Chief of Police in Hancock from 1979 until 1984; a security officer for Fairchild Company; and he recently retired from the Maryland Correctional Facility where he worked as a correctional officer.

He was a member of the American Legion, in Hancock, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and he served two terms on the Town Council of Hancock from 1996 until 2004.

He is survived by a son, William Thomas Mills and wife, Debbie, of Hancock; a daughter, Kathy L. Bowers and husband, Paul A., of Warfordsburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Dustin Vanorsdale, in Montana, Shawn Vanorsdale, in Warfordsburg, Pa., Joshua and Ashley Mills, in Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Brittany Schriever, in Hancock; and nine great-grandchildren, Dana, Kimberly and Cameron, in Montana, Caleb and Regan, in Hancock, Shawn, Lilyann, Jean, and Raelynn, in Fort Ashby, W.Va.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Darwin T. Mills, Jr.; and brothers, Bruce J. Mills, Jr., and William S. Mills.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, in Hancock. Rev. William Swope will officiate. Burial will follow in the Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren cemetery, in Hancock.

The family will received friends at the Funeral Home, on Friday, October 7, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
