Dorothy Louise Smith

Dorothy Louise Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, and member of the Long Hollow Church in Hancock, Maryland, passed away on May 24th, 2023, in Kearneysville, West Virginia at the age of 82.

She was born on September 30th, 1940, to Ida Gertrude Barnhart and Wilbert Kerns in Hagerstown, Maryland and grew up in Hancock where she graduated from Hancock High School. 

Dorothy was a devoted homemaker and took great pride in caring for her family. She enjoyed spending time with them, completing crossword puzzles and watching her favorite TV shows. Dorothy was especially fond of the Home Shopping Network and could often be found browsing their offerings. 

A visitation will be held on June 9th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Grove Funeral Home, P.A., located at 141 West Main Street in Hancock followed by a memorial service at 7:00 pm also at the funeral home.  Pastor Richard Rutherford will officiate.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Virgil F. Smith as well as her granddaughter, Heather Anderson, brothers Melvin Kerns, Albert Kerns, David Neil Kerns and sisters Anna Isabelle Keefer, Irene Kerns, Aurilla Kerns and Katherine Bowers. She is survived by her son Ricky Kerns (Karen) of Martinsburg, WV; Granddaughter April Kennedy (Timothy) of Hagerstown; Grandsons Brandon Kerns of Warfordsburg PA and Roman Shirley of Martinsburg, WV: Great Grandchildren Corrie Kennedy, Lauryn Kennedy,Gabrielle Kennedy and Timothy Kennedy II all of Hagerstown MD; and a sister Janet May Deneen of Hagerstown MD.

Dorothy Smith will always be remembered for her devotion to her family, her love of crosswords and the Home Shopping Network and her unshakeable faith. She will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dorothy’s name to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV. 25430.
