Elizabeth Schreiber

Hancock, Maryland

Elizabeth (Beth) Fairchild Heller Schreiber, age 91, passed away at her home in Stayton, Or. on Friday, October 11, 2013. She had been declining in health, but her sudden death was a shock to the family and her loving caregivers.

She was born July 18, 1922, to the late Daniel Elwood Heller and Bertha Elizabeth Rhodes Heller.

She grew up in Hancock and graduated from Hancock High School in June, 1940, and met her late husband, Bob Schreiber, when he was part of the crew that was building the new bridge in Hancock. They married on October 15, 1940 and moved to Baltimore, Md., Martinsville, Va., Natchez, Ms., and then settled in Los Angeles, Ca. to start a family.

She was a housewife until the children were older and they moved to South Pasadena. It was there that she catered private parties to the “rich and famous” in and around Pasadena. Her passions were cooking and traveling. She attended cooking schools in France and Italy, and had the pleasure of working with Julia Child and Jacques Pepin.

She and her husband, Bob, traveled all over the world. Bob was a very good photographer, and made albums of their travels, which were proudly displayed on their coffee table. She enjoyed Hawaii so much that on their 25th anniversary, she and Bob purchased a plot of land on the big island. For her 80th birthday, she wanted to cruise around the islands with family and friends. She decided to repeat her birthday wish with another cruise on her 90th birthday. Family and friends had a wonderful time renting vans and sightseeing with her.

While living in South Pasadena, she was an active member of the Oneonta Church, the Women’s Club, and the Pasadena Art Museum Society. In Stayton, she was an active member of the Stayton Hospital Auxiliary Board, and a very active card-playing group of ladies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Robert Schreiber, and their son, William Elwood Schreiber.

She is survived by a son, Robert (Sarge) Allen Schreiber, of Lyons, Or.; and a daughter, Marilyn Elizabeth (Mary Beth) Rollin, of Glendora, Ca.; a sister, Lela Heller Zimmerman Porter, of Tucson, Az.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece.

Services were held at the Weddle Funeral Chapel, 1777 North 3rd Avenue, Stayton, Or., on Thursday, October 17, 2013.

Burial, with a family graveside service, will be in Hancock, Md., in the Hancock Presbyterian Cemetery, on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt will officiate.

Final arrangements were handled by the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md.
