Floyd Nelson Hendershot, age 87, of Cumberland, Md., passed into his heavenly journey on January 29, 2020, at the Martinsburg, WV Veterans Medical Center Long-Term Care facility, with his son at his side.
Floyd was born April 9, 1932. He was the son of the late Melvin Lee and Ada Pearl (McCusker) Hendershot, of Buck Valley, Pa.
He had several brothers and sisters; two sons, Larry Floyd Hendershot, of Haymarket, Va., and Stephen Glenn Hendershot, of Cumberland, Md.; and a deceased infant daughter, Sharon. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Larry's children, Ryan, who preceded him in death, Sharilyn and Sabrina, and Steve's children, Travis, Cassandra and Bryce; and also two beautiful great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Skyler (Travis’ children).
In the early 1970's, Floyd had a residence in Kieffer, W.Va., near Paw Paw, W.Va., but spent some of his early life in Baltimore, Md., and most of his final years in Cumberland, Md.
Floyd was in the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950's in the Korean War. Afterwards, he attended trade school, and was then employed as a machinist at Martin Corporation, and later at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, both in Baltimore, Md.
In Floyd's more active days, he found much joy in riding his ATV on a 350-acre farm near Slanesville, W.Va., and property in Kitzmiller, Md. He also enjoyed doing woodworking at home, including building children's toys for his grandchildren.
He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Floyd’s graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., at the Buck Valley Methodist Church Cemetery, in Warfordsburg, Pa., which is located at the intersection of Rt 484 Buck Valley Road and Rt 731 Fairview Road. Marty Fisher, Counselor Cumberland Ward Bishopric, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard. All family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances are invited to honor Floyd at this special gathering to remember him.
We extend a very special thanks to all of those at the Martinsburg VA Hospital who lovingly cared for Floyd, especially in the past five years while he was a resident there. For this, we will be forever grateful.
