George Leroy Egolf, age 87, of Hancock, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.
Born February 10, 1923 in Mercersburg, PA., he was the son of the late Daniel and Florence Metcalf Egolf.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, during World War II, from 1943-1945, and was a Purple Heart recipient.
He was a painting contractor for 67 years and an auctioneer for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Fayetta Younker Egolf, whom he married June 3, 1942; three daughters, Carolle Plotner, Darlene Smith and Kathy Funk, all of Hancock, MD.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lydia Hykes, Ruth Hornbaker and Mary Straley; seven brothers, Charlie Egolf, Harry Egolf, Earl Egolf, Elmer Egolf, Ralph Egolf, Paul Egolf and John Egolf.
A service will be held Wednesday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren, Hollow Road, Hancock, MD. Rev. Harry E. Strite will officiate. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, MD., and at the church on Wednesday 10-11 a.m. For the convenience of family and friends the funeral home will be open 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday.
