Jack Orville Hill, III, age 54, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015 in Hagerstown, Md.
Jack was born on November 22, 1960, in Hagerstown, to Jack O. Hill, Jr. and Marian Coonts Hill, of Hancock, Md.
He attended Smithburg schools and graduated high school from Highland View Academy. He earned an Associate Degree from Hagerstown Junior College, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Journalism from Shepherd University in 1984.
He worked as a sports correspondent for the Herald Mail for 28 years. Prior to that, he had worked at the Martinsburg Journal, also as a sports reporter.
Sports was not only Jack’s career, it was his passion. He supported and followed local teams, ranging from youth leagues up through college level. Jack loved his Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Hagerstown Suns, and watching World Wrestling Entertainment.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Charmane M. Hill and Anna V. Hill-Dobbins, both of Hagerstown; one nephew, Jonathan M. H. Dobbins, also of Hagerstown; one niece, Elizabeth A. Rau and husband, Steven; and great nieces Ava G. Rau and Aubrey H. Rau, all of Martinsburg, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Mitchell D. Dobbins.
Funeral services will be held at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main Street, Hancock, Md., on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. The Rev F. Allan Weatherholt, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, from 5 until 8 p.m., and one hour before services on Wednesday. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will be open from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
