Lois Hope Landers Younker, age 87, of Tollgate Ridge, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at her home.

Born October 27, 1923, near Hancock, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Charles and Ida Bella Robinson Landers.

She was a resident of Thompson Township, Fulton County, Pa., where she was involved with the Family-Operated Farms and Custom Meat Processing.

She was a 1940 graduate of Hancock High School, and a 1944 graduate of Allegany Hospital School of Nursing by the Sisters of Charity in Cumberland, Md.

A Veteran of W.W. II, she served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp. While employed at the University of Maryland Hospital, she joined the American Red Cross emergency call for nurses in the Polio epidemics of 1949-1950, at Little Rock, Ar.; Minneapolis, Mn.; and Baltimore, Md.

She did private home and hospital nursing for several years, retiring in 1983 from the Maryland State Health Dept., after 30 years of service as a Public Health Nurse in Washington County, Md.

She was a participant in the Nurse Health Study by the Harvard Medical School since 1976, a research program of professional women in relation to health and disease.

She was a charter member of the Women in Military Service for the American Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

She was a member of  Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Eldon P. Younker, whom she married December 21, 1956; two sons, Kirk T. Younker and wife, Diane, Blane T. Younker and wife, Jackie, all of Fulton Co., Pa.; one step-daughter, Judy Esque, of McConnellsburg, Pa.; four grandsons, Travis, Byron, Kyle and Adam Younker.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor Landers, Ralph H. Landers and Harry Rodger Landers.

A service will be held Thursday, June 9, at 11:00 a.m., at Damascus Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, Pa. Rev. Duane L. Jensen and Rev. Russell Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in the Damascus Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, Md., Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the Funeral Home will be open from 2 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Damascus Christian Church, 199 E. Pittman Road, Needmore, Pa. 17238
