Lucy Patricia Billings McKinley died at Ravenwood Nursing Center in Hagerstown, MD on Friday, Apr. 9,2021. Born in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 10, 1923, she was the daughter of Jay Elmer and Edith May Baker Billings. She was the foster child of her paternal aunt and uncle, George Joseph and Ida Billings Trexler, of Thurmont, MD beginning in Jan. 1924, upon the illness and soon death of her mother. Pat was 87 years of age before she was able to see a picture of her birth mother, which then began the search of her family history. Pat graduated from Thurmont High School in 1940, and then, Hagerstown Business College where she met her future husband, Harry C."Mac" McKinley. After graduating from college, she worked for the United States Maritime Commission in Washington, D.C., from 1941 to 1943, having to wait till she turned 18 to begin work there, On Apr. 10, 1943, she married 'Mac'. In Dec. 1944, Mac was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held prisoner till the end of the war in 1945. While raising her 3 children, Neil, Steve, and Patti, she was the face of McKinley's Food Market in Hancock. Always with a smile on her face and a happy greeting, she was a solid friend to all including her customers, employees, and the fellow business community, After the close of the grocery story in Hancock in the 1970's, she became a direct care aide at Western Maryland Hospital for 11 years on the evening shift. In 1995, Pat and Mac moved to Hagerstown, Md. Their family home in Hancock, is now The 1828 Trail Inn Bed and Breakfast, It is a lovely reflection of her style and flair. Pat was a lover of all animals and had helped many dogs, cats, and horses. She was an avid supporter of her many charities. She was a member of 'The Descendants of the Mayflower Society thru her many times great grandfather, Joseph Warren. Also, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution thru her ancestor, Samuel Billings. Pat was predeceased by her husband, mother and father, foster parents, brothers and their wives- Jay and Dorothy Billings, Frank and Dot Billings, and foster brother and wife, Edwin and Jeanne Cullen Trexler, and most recently, by her son, Harry C. (Neil) McKinley. Also, predeceased by her, father and mother in law, Harry Grant and Reta Cornelius McKinley, Also, sister in laws and spouses, Janice McKinley Reisman and husband Rev. William Reisman, Gwendolyn McKinley and husband, Rev. John Hill and Dolores McKinley and husband Harry Strock. She is survived by son Steve and daughter in law, Gloria, of Hagerstown, MD and daughter Patti, and son in law, Mike Crouse, of Lexington, VA, and daughter in law, Millie McKinley Hancock, 8 grandchildren, Shelly Kerns and husband Tony, Colin McKinley and wife Shannon, Troy McKinley and wife Patricia, Monique Fisher and husband Tim, Andy with fiance Leighanne, Cara, Kellen and wife Deb Handy, and Hannah Crouse with fiance Thanasi Halkias, along with 11 great grandchildren, Kayla, Lauren, Taylor, Sarah, Hunter, Emmaleigh, Josh, Mercedes, Elisha, Sophia, and Jackson 2 great grandchildren, Grant and Kaylee and a wonderful extended family. She will be greatly missed. Till the very end, her sweetness and love touched all. Services are yet to be scheduled at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to your local SPCA, St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Lappans, Md, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hancock, MD., or your local historical society.
