Marlyn Paul Habel, 68, formerly of Lancaster County, entered in to rest on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 8:57 AM. His wife, stepdaughter and two of his nephews were by his side.
Marlyn grew up in the Cabbage Hill area of Lancaster City with his three brothers, Mike, Pete, and Rick. He was a 1973 graduate of McCaskey High School where he excelled in baseball. He then went on to play Fast Pitch Softball for many years, achieving numerous awards and accomplishments along the way.
He then started umpiring for the Little League Pennsylvania District 23 Solanco LL from the late nineties to early two thousand. Marlyn earned Umpire of the Year in 2003, 2005 and 2007. With his love of sports, he was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Philly’s and the Green Bay Packers.
He was also a sportsman who loves to hunt. His favorite place to do so was in State Game Lands, Area #49.
Marlyn retired from Stoner Inc. in Quarryville, Lancaster County in 2015, after thirty years of employment. He and his wife then purchased their retirement home in Fulton County, where they have lived for the last eight and a half years.
Marlyn was a very laid-back guy who got along with everyone. Never judgmental and always there when someone needed him. He was like a father to many including his nieces, nephews, and stepdaughter. He is missed dearly by everyone who knew him.
Marlyn leaves behind his wife of over twenty years, Lorie (Sterner) Habel; stepdaughter Sarah (Brown) Gingerich; three grandchildren, Lacey, Noah, and Roo; two great grandchildren Dahlia and Rowan. One brother, Ricky Sr, and his partner Donna. Along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents James Sr and Gloria (Abel) Habel. Brother Mike and his wife Sally Habel and brother James Jr “Pete” Habel and his son-in-law Steven Gingerich Sr.
A soulful thank you to his nephews, Ricky Jr and Jeff, and his stepdaughter, Sarah, for the diligence, devotion and love they have for Marlyn, being there, by his side, aiding and assisting in his care, during his last days on Earth.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family and a donation fund will be set up at the Lancaster County ASPCA in his name.
“I miss you and love you today and I will miss you and love you tomorrow as I will miss you and love you forever.”
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Grove-Rogowski Funeral Home, 141 West Main St, Hancock, MD. Online condolences can be expressed to the family at www.grfuneralhome.net.
