Marvin Albert Douglas, age 94, went to be with the Lord, at his home surrounded by his family, on Sunday March 2, 2014.
Born March 28, 1919, in Fulton County, Pa., he was the son of the late Ora and Mattie Winters Douglas, and the husband of the late Nina Jean Miller Douglas, his first wife of 31 years, who died on November 19, 1978, and the late Mary A. Suder Douglas, his second wife of 30 years, who died on January 28, 2014.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army, Big Red 1, 1st Division, from 1942 to 1945. He fought in Africa; the first wave on Sicily; the first wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day; and continued fighting through to the end of the war, in battles including Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge. His commendations included the Purple Heart; the Bronze Star; the Good Conduct Medal; the Infantry Combat Badge; the Presidential Citation; the European-Mediterranean Theatre Ribbon; and Cluster with 6 Battle Stars. The Arrow Head Award and Poto Gear were given by the French Government.
He and his late brother, Gene, were partners at the former Douglas Sinclair Service Station, in Hancock, Md.
He was a member of the Damascus Christian Church, and attended the Mooresville First Church of God. He enjoyed farming, raising cattle, bowling, playing Dixie Rook, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his son, Marvin Lynn Douglas and wife, Diane; three brothers, Bruce Douglas, Marlin Douglas, and Ellis Douglas; grandchildren, Michael Douglas and wife, Jennifer, and Hollie Adams and husband, Jason; and great-grandchildren that he dearly loved, Dawson Douglas, Peyton Adams, and Hadley Adams.
Besides his parents and wives, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Douglas and Melvin Douglas; and two sisters, Thelma McKee, and Lucille Weller.
A service will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 11:00 a.m., at the Damascus Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, Pa. Rev. Dean Metcalfe, Sr. will officiate. Burial, with a military service by the Tri-State Honor Guard, will be in the adjoining Damascus Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., and at the Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Md. 21740, who had been so helpful to both him and his second wife, Mary.
