Mary Virginia (Purnell) Goetzke, age 104, formerly of Hancock, Md., died Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home, Boonsboro, Md.
Born April 7, 1907, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Amanda Hartley Purnell, and widow of Henry Goetzke, who died in 1989.
She was a resident of Baltimore City most of her adult life.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Baltimore, and attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, in Hancock.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 3, Hagerstown, Md., and formerly a member of Alpha Chapter 1, Order of the Eastern Star, Baltimore, where she served three terms as Worthy Matron.
She is survived by one brother, Howard Purnell, of Greencastle, Pa.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Genevieve Sipes; and two brothers, Frederick and Edwin Purnell.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 13, at 5:00 p.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Garden of Faith Memorial Park, Baltimore, Md.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 4:00 p.m. until time of services.
