Hancock, Maryland
Maynard Curtis Spade, age 72, of Hancock, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md.
Born January 7, 1942, in Crystal Spring, Pa., in the home of his parents, the late Warren Arthur and Sarah Pearl Reel Spade.
He was a 1959 graduate of Southern Fulton High School, in Warfordsburg, Pa., and in 1962 he graduated from the Thaddeus Stevens Trade School, in Lancaster, Pa.
He worked as a carpenter all of his life, and he retired from Ryland Homes, in Cumberland, Md. in April 6, 2005.
He was in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Maynard enjoyed reading old Westerns; tinkering around in his woodshop; fishing; cooking; gardening; and watching his grandchildren play sports. He coached Little League Baseball and Senior League Baseball for several years. He enjoyed riding his bicycle on the Rails and Trails.
Maynard was a gentle, kind, and good-hearted person who never met a stranger. He was a wonderful role model to his children, grandchildren, and everyone he met.
In his early years he was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church, and was now a member of the St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, in Hancock.
He was a member of the James W. Bowers Masonic Lodge #173 AF & AM, in Hancock, and had just received his 25-year pin.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Josephine Breakall Spade; one son, Marty Brian Spade, of Hancock; two daughters, Julie Anna Unger and husband, Phillip Unger, Jr., of Mercersburg, Pa., Jennifer Sarah Alkire and husband, Corey, of Big Pool, Md.; five grandchildren, Dakota Allen Unger, Josie Marie Spade, Tyler Curtis Unger, Callie Joanna Alkire, and Jase Carlton Wilson Alkire; one brother, Joe Spade, of Crystal Spring, Pa.; and one sister, Maxine Barton and husband, Jay, of Crystal Spring, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister.
A service will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 2 East High Street, Hancock, Md. Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt, Jr., and Rev. Kirk E. DeVore will officiate. Burial will follow in the Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Cemetery, in Needmore Pa.
The family will receive friends at the Church on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by the James W. Bowers Lodge #173 AF & AM.
The family requests that memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 2 East High Street, Hancock, Md. 21750.
