Melvin Ray "Mel" Starliper, 78, of Hagerstown, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home.
Born July 25, 1935, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Harvey and Mary Thomas Starliper, and the widower of the late Gladys R. Starliper, who died May 4, 1985.
He was a retired burner at Maryland Metals.
He was a member of The Order of Owls Nest 1762, in Hagerstown, Md.
He is survived by five daughters, Patsy Long, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Wilma Hull, of Hancock, Md., Debra Landers, of Mercersburg, Pa., and Elaine Atherton, and Jennifer Lynn Starliper, both of Hagerstown; three sons, Richard Starliper, of Hagerstown, and Clarence “Tuck” McCartney, and Melvin Starliper Jr., both of Falling Waters, W.Va.; one sister, Rachel DeShong and husband, Nelson, of McConnellsburg, Pa.; a number of grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Sue Starliper; two sons, Merle McCartney, and Clinton McCartney; and two brothers, Roy Starliper and Charles “Buck” Starliper.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 13, at 11 a.m., at Orchard Ridge Cemetery, Orchard Ridge Road, Hancock. The Rev. Ben Murray will officiate.
The family requests that memorial donations, in his name, may be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21742.
