Mildred Elizabeth (Mills) Smith, age 62, of Hancock, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born November 9, 1951, at home in Clear Spring, Md., she was the daughter of the late Gordon Richard Mills and Thelma Pearl (Bowers) Mills, formerly of Clear Spring, Md.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Hildebert Edward Smith, Jr.
She is also survived by one daughter, Kelly Elizabeth (Smith) Powell and her husband, Barry Wayne Powell, of Hancock; two sons, Edward Richard Smith and wife, Stephanie Ann (Barnhart) Smith, of Hagerstown, Md., and Christopher Michael Smith, of Hancock; five granddaughters, Madelyn Christine Smith, Dana Elizabeth Smith, Erin Marie Smith, all of Hagerstown, Md., Hannah Elizabeth Powell and Emma-Mae Grace Powell, both of Hancock; one step-grandson, Steven Tyler Powell, of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; two step-great-grandchildren, both in Bunkerhill, W.Va.; two sisters, Wilma Lee Corder and husband, Lonnie, of Hagerstown, Md., and Stella Darlene Trumpower and husband, Michael, of Needmore, Pa.; two brothers, Jesse Michael Mills and wife, Rose, of Clear Spring, Md., and Grailing John Mills and wife, Susan, of Clear Spring, Md.; two brothers-in-law, Gilbert Samuel Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Boonsboro, Md., and Robert Mills, of Clear Spring, Md.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Claudia Marie Mills; and one niece, Sherry Jean Mills.
She was a 1969 graduate of Clear Spring High School.
She was an employee, for fifteen years, at the former London Fog Manufacturing plant. She was also a part-time waitress at the former National Restaurant, in Hancock. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She was a past member of the Hancock Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary; a past member of the Hancock Rescue Squad, where she served as President, Lieutenant of Equipment, an (EMT) and a (CRT) cardiac rescue technician. She was a member of the Clear Spring rescue squad, where she also served as a (CRT). She was a member of the Berkeley Chapter #77 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was past Worthy Matron, and held numerous offices. She was a member, and an assistant Sunday school teacher at the Damascus Christian Church, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scout Pack in Hancock. She enjoyed spending time in the outdoors; camping; and gardening. She also enjoyed spending precious quality time with family, friends, and especially her granddaughters, and loving dogs.
A service will be held on Thursday, May 15, at 11:00 a.m., at the Damascus Christian Church. Rev. Loy Garber will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining Damascus Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, and at the Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. A service by Berkeley Chapter #77 of the Order of the Eastern Star will be held at 6:30 on Wednesday.
