Paul Charles Winkler, US Navy Veteran of World War II, died peacefully on April 24, 2011, at his home, with his three daughters at his side.
Born January 26, 1918, he was the son of Charles William Winkler, Sr. and Elizabeth M. Winkler, (nee Wagner).
He was preceded in death, in 1988, by his wife Alice E. Winkler, (nee Daffin), after 47 years of marriage.
Mr. Winkler was the oldest parishioner at St. Peter Catholic Church, Hancock, Md., at the time of his death.
He was a life-long member of the National Rifle Association and AARP. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, coming to the Hancock area in the 50's to enjoy both sports at his cabins and the three creeks of "Triple Creek Hideaway".
Winkler was born and raised in Baltimore, Md., relocating to Hancock in 1968 when Interstate 695 took his home.
Surviving are his three daughters, Deidra E. Baer, of Baltimore, Md., Paula A. Mabey and husband, Edward J., of Hancock, Md., and Susan E. Winkler, of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Dorothy White, of Baltimore, Md. and Lillian Walters, of Pennsylvania; four granddaughters, Gwendolyn L. Baer Newport and husband, Mickey, of Ridgely, Md., Melissa J. Baer Bauer and husband, Earl, of Lodge Forest, Md., Tamara L. Mabey Baxter and husband, Mark, of Frederick, Md., and Marie-Megan A. Mabey-Leach and husband, Ronald, of Hancock, Md.; three great-granddaughters, Lauren A. Newport, of Denton, Md., Allyson E. Bauer, of Edgemere, Md., and Sydney E. Mabey, of Hancock, Md.; six great-grandsons, Benjamin A. Newport; Tyler F. Newport and Brooks E. Newport, all from Ridgely, Md., Terrance J. Bauer, of Lodge Forest, Md., Eddy M. Leach and Waylon R. Leach, both of Hancock, Md.
Winkler was anticipating the arrival, in August, of his great-great granddaughter, Madelyn Jean Wippert, daughter of Lauren A. Newport and Scott Wippert of Denton, Md.
Mr. Winkler was also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews all across the United States, from Baltimore to California and Arizona, from the Carolinas to Pennsylvania and Alaska.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles W. Winkler, William Winkler, and Louis Winkler; two sisters, Elizabeth Hunnings and Margaret Winkler; and one son-in-law, Gene Baer.
Mr. Winkler was employed by Crown Cork and Seal Company, which he left July 2, 1939 to enter the Navy. He was honorably discharged, September 24, 1945, as Master Machinist Mate First Class (T) USNR. Winkler then returned to the Crown Company and, later, was employed by Sparrows Point Ship Yard. He completed his work career as a rough carpenter, and worked out of the D.C., Hagerstown, and Cumberland local Unions.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Hancock, Md. Rev. John Lombardi will be the celebrant. Military Honors will be by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at the Church on Saturday, from 12 to 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742, or to the American Lung Association, 211 E. Lombard St. #260, Baltimore, MD 21202.
