Hancock, Maryland---Robert Calvin McCusker, age 85, of Hancock, died Monday, February 7, 2011 at his home.
Born January 20, 1926, in Hancock, he was the son of the late William A. McCusker and Hazel R. Munson McCusker.
He served in the U.S. Army, during W.W.II, with the 16th Armored Division, 5th Tank Group, under General Patton.
He married Aura Blanche Ward on January 26, 1947.
He had worked with Dillon Orchards, Blue Goose Storage, Pacific Lighting, and Fairview Orchards, which then became H & H storage, where he retired from in May, 2003. He and his wife also owned and operated McCusker's Service Station, on Sideling Hill, from 1953 until 1988.
He was a life member and a past deacon of the Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, and also attended Hancock Assembly of God Church.
He was post commander of the VFW Post 10502 for 23 years, where he held Bingo every Monday night for 20 years. He decorated Main Street of Hancock with numerous American flags on all national holidays, as well as days designated by the VFW as "flag flying days".
January 20, 2011 was designated as Bob McCusker Day, in Hancock, in honor of the flags and other projects that he worked on.
He was a member of the Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post 26; a member, and past president, of the Hancock Rotary Club, as well as a Paul Harris fellow; and a life-time member of the Hancock Historical Society. Two of the many local projects he was involved in were the move of the Hancock Library out of the flood zone; and the design, fundraising effort, and building of the Hancock War Memorial Monument located in the Widmeyer Park.
He was a recipient of the Community Foundation of Washington County People's Choice Award in 2006.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his three daughters, Ann Mazingo and husband Dennis, of Hagerstown, Md., Sandra Watring and husband Elmer, of Parsons, W.Va., and Vickie Vann of Hancock, Md.; sisters, Genevive Plante, of Williamsport, Md., Fern Hart, of Warfordsburg, Pa., Lorna Thomas of Fruitland, Md., and Harriet Yost, of Berkley Springs, W.Va.; brothers, Leroy McCusker, of Cumberland Md., and Henry McCusker of Hancock, Md. He is also survived by one granddaughter and seven grandsons, and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, William G. McCusker in 1949 and Robert C. McCusker in 2004; grandsons, Eric D. Mazingo, Vincent J. McCusker and William A. McCusker; one sister, Margaretta C. Joy; and brothers, Millard F. McCusker and Harry W. McCusker.
A service will be held Thursday, February 10, at 11:00 a.m., at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, 14253 Exline Road, Hancock, Md. The Rev. Philip Unger will officiate. Burial, with military honors by the District 3 VFW, will be in the Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, Md., Tuesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Wednesday, the Funeral Home will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends Thursday, at the Church from 10 to 11 a.m.
