Roy Wilson McCarthy, age 85, of Hancock, Md., passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, Md.
Born November 22, 1931, in Pecktonville, Md., he was the son of the late Nevin L. and Alice P. (Hull) McCarthy, and the husband of the late Dolores Jean (Shifflet) McCarthy, who passed away on September 15, 2012.
He was a life member of both St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, in Hancock, and Parkhead United Methodist Church, in Big Pool, Md.
He was a member of the UAW Local 171, in Hagerstown, Md.
He was a retired machinist, after 30 years of employment with Mack Trucks, in Hagerstown. He was an avid carpenter, and enjoyed growing tomatoes and relaxing on his front porch.
He is survived by two daughters, Gina L. Turner, of Hagerstown, and Kelli L. Shives, of Little River, S.C.; two sons, Michael L. McCarthy, Sr., of Hancock, and Rodney L. McCarthy, of Clear Spring, Md.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Merle Swandel, Mary Shupp, Daisy Hart, Esther Shupp, and Clara Belle McCarthy; and two brothers, Nevin Luther McCarthy and John David McCarthy.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, in Hancock, on Sunday, August 20, 2017, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Services will be held at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Church and High Streets, in Hancock, on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt and Rev. Grant Spong will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, in Hagerstown, Md.
