Ruth Evelyn (Kirk) Smith, age 71, of Warfordsburg, Pa., passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018, at Doey’s Hospice House, in Hagerstown, Md.

Born December 20, 1946, in Warfordsburg, she was the daughter of the late Robert George and Fairy Luttie (VanGosen) Kirk.

She was a member of the Hancock Methodist Church, in Hancock, Md., and attended the Needmore Bible Church, in Needmore, Pa.

She worked at the War Memorial Hospital, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., for twenty-eight years, as a medical transcriptionist.

Ruth was happiest when she was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she loved cooking large meals and baking pies for her family.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, John R. Smith, of Warfordsburg; a daughter, Denise E. Mellott and her husband, Denny, of Needmore, Pa.; two sons, Steven T. Smith and his wife, Beth, of Downingtown, Pa., and David R. Smith and his wife, Ginny, of Warfordsburg;  a sister, Alice V. Layton, of Warfordsburg; six grandchildren, Justin L. Mellott and his wife, Jenn, Brad R. Mellott, Kayla M. Smith, Megan Smith, A. J. Smith, and Catie G. Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Gaven E., Micah A. and Kylie E. Mellott.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, George R. “Bobby” Kirk; and three great-grandsons, Aiden, Malachi, and Tristin Mellott.

A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Needmore Bible Church, 6939 Great Cove Road, Needmore, Pa. Pastor Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Church one hour prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in her name may be made to The American Cancer Society or Hospice of Washington County and Doey's House.
