Sara “Sally” Eleanor Fost, age 96, of Hancock, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, MD.
Born in Abington, PA on Sunday, September 2, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Albert Burgess McKinley and Sarah Mildred Dixon McKinley, and the loving wife of Mark Harold Fost.
Sally was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and attended the Banks Business College in Philadelphia. At the age of forty, Sally had a change of career and began working for The Hancock News as a reporter. For fifteen years, she managed the office, covered town government activities, and wrote an award-winning column called “Scenes from Sara.”
Sally was a very involved member of the Hancock community and was recognized for “Life of Leadership.” Sally was the first woman elected to the Hancock Town Council, serving for eight years. She also served on the Area of Aging, the Budget Task Force for the Board of Education, and was active in the Maryland Municipal League. She served as a county appointee on the Tri-State Council, volunteered at the Loaves and Fishes store, and was on the Hancock Ethics Commission.
She was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hancock and was the first woman elected to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Vestry.
Sally was also a loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Richard) Jeffries; two sons, David (Beth) Fost and Mike (Sandy) Fost; one brother, Robert McKinley; and her daughter-in-law, Donna Fost, as well as nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Herb Fost and two sisters, Jane McKinley Horn and Joanne McKinley Quense.
A visitation with family will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 10:00a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2 East Hight Street, Hancock, MD 21750.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
