Walter “Bud” Raymond Dyer, Jr., age 90 of Hancock, MD, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024, at his home.
Born Wednesday, December 27, 1933, in Fulton County, PA, he was the son of the late Walter R. Dyer, Sr. and Pleasant M. Zimmerman.
Bud was a graduate of Hancock High School Class of 1951. He was self-employed as a masonry contractor for over forty years. His masonry work is well known and can be seen throughout the tri-state area.
He was a member of the Hancock United Methodist Church, having sixty years of perfect attendance at Sunday School. He was a member of the Hancock Lions Club receiving the Melvin James Lions Award. He was co-chair of the Hancock Canal Apple Day parade for many years.
Walt was the iconic owner of the #461 “Brickmobile” sprint car. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa, the York County Racing Club Hall of Fame, and the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown, Maryland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marsha Vantz (2016), two sisters, Evangeline Pelton and Geraldine French, and friend, Janet Henderson.
Bud was survived by two daughters, Linda Northcraft and husband, Alan of Mercersburg, PA, Kimberly Smith of Timonium, MD; four grandchildren, Emily Beth Kriner and husband, Clint; Matthew Walter Smith and wife, Amanda; Sarah Dyer Beavers and husband, Thomas; and Ashley Nicole Dail and husband, Jonathan; five great grandsons and three great granddaughters.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Hancock United Methodist Church, 170 W. Main Street, Hancock, MD 21750. Funeral service will be held Friday, November 22, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Hancock United Methodist Church with one hour visitation prior to service. Pastor Becki Wessinger will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud’s name can be made to the Hancock United Methodist Church, Hancock Lions Club or the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Knoxville, Iowa.
